Description
Shieling is a pair of houses located in Hertingfordbury, dating from the late 17th century, though they likely have earlier origins. The buildings were extended and altered in the 20th century. They feature a timber frame that is rendered, with a tiled roof. Originally, they may have been a 2 bay open hall, but they have been remodelled and extended to create a 4 bay pair. The houses are one storey with an attic.
On the ground floor, there is a central 20th-century gabled porch, with two 20th-century 16-pane sash windows to the left and two small pane casements to the right, all with flush frames. The attic includes four gabled dormers with small panes. There is a central cross axial ridge stack and external end stacks, with the right stack having offsets. The left end features a small entrance porch addition that has a 20th-century Gothic glazed door. At the rear of No. 14, there is a catslide roof over a continuous lean-to outshut, and a 20th-century wing at the rear of No. 12.
Inside No. 14, there are stop-chamfered bearers, jowled posts, and braces in the walling. No. 12 was not inspected. The Cowper Arms Public House operated from 1786 to 1870 nearby.
