Description
The Old Curatage is a house located in Hertingfordbury, dating from the mid-17th century, with extensions from the mid-19th century and later alterations. It features a timber frame that is mostly rendered, with some areas of weatherboarding, and has a steeply pitched tiled roof. Originally, the house had a two-cell lobby entry plan with a stair wing and pantry at the rear. It is two storeys high with an attic.
The front of the house showcases pargetting and a weatherboarded dado, with the original entrance in the center now blocked. Above this, there is a two-light small pane flush frame casement window, while the outer bays contain similar three-light casements. A central ridge stack has six clustered diagonally set shafts and has been rebuilt. The left gable end displays exposed panel framing over whitewashed brick on the ground floor, featuring jowled posts and braces.
At the rear left, there is a catslide roof over a lean-to pantry, which has a horizontal sliding sash window. The stair wing at the rear center has a 19th-century stock brick external gable end stack. The right gable end is stuccoed and includes casement windows and a plat band. A later projecting gabled porch connects the main range to a 19th-century rear wing that features recessed sashes. Extending from the pantry on the left is a 20th-century weatherboarded outshut with an entrance. Inside, the house has stop-chamfered binding beams.
