Description

Panshanger South Lodge, built around 1830-1840 for the 5th Earl Cowper, serves as the lodge for the Panshanger Estate. It is constructed from stock brick with rendered dressings and features slate roofs in the Tudor Revival style. The building is single-storey with one bay on each side of a square main block. The front has a two-light small pane casement with Gothic leaded lights, a chamfered surround, and a Tudor arched outer head with a hood mould. Above this is a recessed plaque displaying the Cowper arms, also with a hood mould. The lodge has two-stage set-back buttresses and a cornice leading to a tall coped parapet.

On the left side facing the drive, there is a projecting entrance porch with steps leading up to a door that has a chamfered Tudor arched surround. Above the porch is a blind lancet, with the parapet and buttresses matching those at the front. The rear of the lodge mirrors the front, featuring a shield on a plaque with a tree design. The right side has a slightly extruded stack with three octagonal shafts. Extending to the right and rear is a lower range with a single-light casement at the front and similar casements at the rear, all beneath a parapet.

The lodge is accompanied by iron gates with X bracing and spear-headed railings, flanked by two octagonal buttressed ashlar piers topped with moulded cornices and larger octagonal caps. To the left of the gates is a small gatehouse made of red brick, square in plan. Facing the lodge, there are steps leading up to a plank and muntin door with a rendered chamfered Tudor arched surround. Above the door is a blind lancet, and the front and rear feature Gothic single-light casements with hood moulds.
