Description
The Thatches is a house located in Braughing village, dating from the 18th century or earlier, with a later extension from the 19th century. The main structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a steep thatched roof. There are lower extensions to the east and west made of brick and plaster, each with steep slate roofs. The original part of the house, which is one and a half storeys high, faces north and features two gabled dormers with tiled roofs that are set under the thatch. Below the dormers, there are two windows with small panes and small hoods, along with a former doorway that has been converted into a window. A flat-roofed 20th-century extension at the southwest is not considered of special interest. The original house had an external red brick chimney at the west end. The main entrance has been relocated to the rear and is now accessed through a glazed porch. At each end of the house, there are one-storey and attic 19th-century wings that are balanced and feature gable attic windows with two-light casements and small panes. The property is marked as 'Pest House' on an enclosure map from around 1820 in the Hertfordshire Record Office.
