Description
Two adjacent barns at Amwellbury Farm, dating from the 18th century, are located 40 metres west-south-west of Amwellbury Farmhouse. These barns are tall, unaisled, black weatherboarded, and timber-framed, featuring steep gabled roofs and low red brick sill walls. The larger and taller southern barn has a slated roof, central double doors, and structural bays, with the second and fourth bays narrower than the others. It includes a principal rafter and butt-purlin roof with two purlins on each slope, long curved braces in the walls supporting the tie-beams, curved angle braces in the front doorway, and unusual curved bracing from the wall-plate to the lintel over the blocked rear door. The narrower three-bay northern barn is set at a lower level and is positioned back on the west side. It is also roofed in slates, with gaps for ventilation, and features a clasped-purlin roof structure with collar and angle braces for each truss, long curved braces to the tie-beams, and one purlin on each slope. The sill wall displays irregular English bond red brickwork. Together, these historic weatherboarded barns create a picturesque group with Amwellbury Farmhouse.
