Description

Old Hall Green TL 32 SE STANDON CAMBRIDGE ROAD (west side)

1/10 The Hermitage at St Edmund's College (RC) (180m 24.1.67 to W of Main Building) (formerly listed under St Edmund's EC College, Old Hall Green) GV II

House, for some time a school sanitorium. C17, bought by the School 1771. Timber frame roughcast on a stucco plinth. Steep old red tiled roof, hipped at S, half-hipped at N and E. T-plan house facing W. Wide one and a half storeys main range with 2 storeys crosswing at S of 3 bays. Large external side-chimney to right of door. Boarded door with lean-to canopy and casement window to side. Upper floor has 2 small flush box sash windows. E end of upper floor of crosswing partitioned in C18 as a small chapel with a wooden moulded wide semi circular 'chancel' archway with keystone and imposts.
