Description
The Hermitage at St Edmund's College is a house that has served as a school sanitorium for some time. It dates back to the 17th century and was purchased by the school in 1771. The building features a timber frame that is roughcast on a stucco plinth, topped with a steep old red tiled roof that is hipped at the south and half-hipped at the north and east. It has a T-plan layout, facing west, with a wide one and a half storeys main range and a two-storey crosswing to the south that has three bays. There is a large external side-chimney located to the right of the door, which is a boarded door with a lean-to canopy, accompanied by a casement window to the side. On the upper floor, there are two small flush box sash windows. The eastern end of the upper floor in the crosswing was partitioned in the 18th century to create a small chapel, which features a wooden moulded wide semi-circular 'chancel' archway with a keystone and imposts.
