Description
Rayes House is a house that was formerly the village school, dating from the early 16th century and altered in the 19th century. It features a timber frame with pebble dash render, while the rear wing is made of flint with brick dressings. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and there are tall, early 19th-century patterned terracotta shafts on the ridge stack, along with a side stack on the left-hand gable. The building has two storeys and an original three-unit plan, with four gabled casement dormer windows and an open gabled porch. Inside, there is a substantial exposed timber frame with stop-chamfered cross-beams in the hall, where the joists are laid flat. A 19th-century stack and staircase are located in the original chimney bay.
