Description
The Cottage is a former coachman's house and stables associated with Marden Hill House, now converted into a dwelling. It was built around 1790 for R. Mackay and features red brick construction with a tiled roof. The building has five bays and is one storey with attics, originally housing stables on the left side.
The facade includes central and outer door openings, with the central door now glazed. The outer doors are studded planks topped with small pane rectangular fanlights, which are recessed and have segmental heads. A gabled pentice has been added to the right. To the right of the central door, there is a two-light small pane casement window with a segmental head, and a similar gabled half dormer above it. There are also central and outer blocked round-headed loft openings, and a window has been inserted to the left of the central door, breaking the eaves.
The right gable end is stuccoed, while the left gable end features a ground floor lunette, first floor weatherboarding, and a blocked loft door. The rear of the building has blocked and blind openings, including round-headed windows. A later extension extends from the left end, which includes two doors, four single-light segmental-headed casements, and five first-floor blind panels. The interior has not been inspected.
