Description

Cowper Cottage is a former school building, now two dwellings, constructed in 1839. It was built following a bequest from H. Cowper in 1838. The building has undergone alterations and a re-roofing in the 20th century. It is primarily built of yellow stock brick with white brick dressings and has a pantiled roof.

The building is arranged in a roughly “H” shape. The original school room has a single storey with an attic, while the master's house has a two-storey gable. The left-hand gable, belonging to the school room, features a tall six-light mullion and transom casement window with flanking two-light windows. These windows have hexagon and diamond patterned panes, and are set within chamfered white brick surrounds. Moulded kneelers lead to a coped gable parapet. The right-hand gable of the master’s house has one and two-light casements with similar detailing. A central linking range connects the two gables and has a one-storey 20th-century addition to the front, incorporating a pointed arched door and two-light casements. Behind this, an original two-light gabled dormer is present, complete with moulded kneelers and a parapet. A distinctive cross-axial brick stack rises from the ridge of the linking range, featuring a central square section and diagonally set outer shafts, topped with five octagonal pots. A 20th-century garage addition is situated at the left end, and a cross-gabled bay extends from the rear. The right end of the building has five bays with two-light casements, alongside a 20th-century gabled entrance porch and a two-light gabled dormer. A further 20th-century bay extends from the rear. A gabled dormer is visible on the rear of the linking range. The interior has not been inspected.
