Description

The war memorial stands before St Peter’s Church and was erected in 1920, designed by Sir Herbert Baker. Constructed of Portland stone, it features a simple cross set upon a square, chamfered column with a plain moulded capital. The column is mounted on a two-tiered octagonal base and plinth. A sword of sacrifice is carved into the capital of the column, and a crusader ship is depicted on the base. The front of the plinth bears the inscription "AD TE DOMINE. IN MEMORIAM OFFICERS AND MEN OF TEWIN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918," and the rear inscription reads "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOREVERMORE." The remaining six sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names of the fallen, while a tablet on the base lists those who died during 1939-1945. The memorial acknowledges those who died in both World Wars; later additions included the names of those who died in the Second World War on a tablet. Herbert Baker, who also designed the Tewin Memorial Hall in 1922, was a well-known architect with over forty listed buildings to his name, previously working on major government buildings in South Africa and India, and later serving as an architect for the Imperial War Graves Commission, overseeing the construction of over 100 cemeteries in France. The memorial is designated at Grade II for its historical and architectural significance, and for its group value with St Peter’s Church at the end of a long avenue.
