Description

This is a barn located at Lordship Farm, built in the 16th century and extended in the 17th century, with alterations to the roof in the 19th century. The barn features a timber frame set on a low brick plinth, covered in dark weatherboarding and topped with a steep red tile roof. It was originally a five-bay structure with a central gabled porch facing south and was extended by two bays to the west in the 17th century.

The barn has very large square posts with jowled heads, connected by mid-height rails that are tennoned in-line, and features arched braces in each bay. There are long curved braces supporting the tie beams. The roof structure consists of side purlins and textbook king-post trusses, all constructed with pegs. The lower parts of the walls are plastered internally.

In the older part of the barn, there are edge-halved scarf joints with bridled butts at mid-span, while the two added bays have face-halved bladed scarf joints, less massive posts, and straight braces. There are double doors on the south side leading to the porch and the second bay from the west, with a later outshot at the rear corresponding to this doorway. The rear wallplate of the older section has mortices for a three-light diamond mullioned window, which likely has a shutter-groove on the soffit and may be a reused feature. The barn was known as Slipe Farm until recently.
