BENINGTON WALKERN ROAD (west side) Barn at Lordship Farm (30m to W of new house)

Barn. C16, extended in C17, roof altered in C19. Timber frame on low brick plinth, dark weatherboarded with a steep red tile roof. Originally a 5-bay barn with central gabled porch facing S. Extended 2 bays to W in C17. Very large square posts with jowled heads, linked by mid-height rails tennoned in-line, and arched braces in each bay. Long curved braces to tie beams. Side purlin roof structure with text book king-post trusses in pegged construction. Lower parts of walls plastered internally. Edge-halved scarf joints with bridled butts at mid-span in older part. Face-halved bladed scarf-joints, less massive posts and straight braces in 2 added bays. Double doors on S to porch and 2nd bay from W (later outshot at rear corresponding to this doorway). Rear wallplate in older part has mortices for a 3- light diamond mullioned window with shutter-groove on soffit, probably reused. Until recently call Slipe Farm.
