Description
This is a barn located at Sharlowes Farm, dating from the late 16th century, with two smaller bays added around the same time. The barn features a timber frame that is dark weatherboarded and topped with steep old red tile roofs. It is a tall, eight-bay structure without aisles, facing west with a south gable that faces the road. There are two double door projecting gabled porches on the west side, along with a single winnowing door at the rear of the midstray. A lean-to addition is situated between the porches.
The barn is supported by massive step-jowled posts, with a mid-height rail that is tenoned in-line and curved tension braces positioned above the rail. The soffit of the wallplate has holes for four stakes that would have held wattle-and-daub infill between the three studs located between the bay posts. The structure includes curved braces leading to heavy squared cambered tie-beams. The roof is constructed with queen struts and a collar clasped purlin design, although the wind braces have been removed. The principals above the purlin are not diminished, and the wallplates feature butted scarf joints that are only visible on the soffit. Additionally, there are side notches on the posts and tie-beams that were used for temporary bracing during construction.
