Description

This is a barn, likely dating back to the 17th century, but substantially re-erected in 1722, as evidenced by an inscription on a tie-beam that reads, "THIS BARN BUILT THE YEAR 1722." It is a timber-framed structure with a brick sill, dark weatherboarding, and a steep, half-hipped roof covered with old red tiles. The barn consists of four bays facing north, with a projecting gabled porch situated in the second bay from the west. A lean-to extension with a catslide roof extends eastward from the porch. The interior features a partitioned eastern bay, which contains a heavily framed, inserted floor for a granary, with thin brick infill to the framed partition. The roof is supported by queen posts and clasped purlins. Curved braces extend from posts to cambered tie-beams. The mid-bay posts are unjowled, and a mid-height rail is tenoned in-line. A raised floor made of thick planks is present in the threshing bay. The barn appears to have been originally a 17th century 4-bay barn, adapted for use as both a barn and a granary upon its reconstruction in 1722.
