Description
This former tower windmill was built in 1840 and was disused by the 1920s. In the 1970s, it was converted into a dwelling and incorporated into an extended bungalow from the 1930s.
The windmill is made of red and purple brick laid in Flemish bond, with some remnants of tar on the bricks in places. It features a fibreglass cap from the 1970s that is impregnated with copper. The structure is a tapering tower windmill, with approximately the eastern third integrated into an 'L' shaped 1970s extension to the bungalow.
The exterior of the windmill has four floors, each with window openings beneath elliptical brick heads. There are door openings on the ground floor to the north, east, and south, along with a first-floor taking-in door to the east; all external openings have late 20th-century windows. The round cap, also from the late 20th century, is said to replicate the original form and is topped with a ball finial. Glazing is present at the breast and tail elevations where the sails and fantail gearing would have been attached in the original design.
Inside, the windmill retains its floor frames, including substantial bridging beams and some early 19th-century joists, although others were replaced in the late 20th century. The great spur wheel with timber teeth remains on the first floor, supported by a substantial timber trestle, with part of the drive to the stones still visible. On the third floor, the curb to the cap is still attached to a pegged and jointed timber plate. Two sets of wheels on timber mountings, used to rotate the cap, are present, and the timber frame shows carpenter's marks, though the joists are from the late 20th century. The fourth floor leads to the cap space, where extensive glazing provides views of the surrounding countryside.
The attached bungalow, its extensions, car port, and annexe do not have architectural or historic interest and are not included in the listing.
