Description

The Church of St. Martha, an Anglian Methodist chapel of ease, was built around 1880, likely by the architects Carpenter & Ingelow, who were also involved with the Parish Church. Although construction began from the east, it was not completed. The church features a striking chancel made of uncoursed flint with stone dressings and a steeply pitched red tile roof. The second bay from the east is designed to accommodate a south side aisle or transept, with a stone arch that has been blocked with red brick.

To the north, there is a lower gabled vestry constructed from flint and stone. The west arm is dark weatherboarded, complemented by a brick south porch and slate roofs topped with a ridge vent. The chancel boasts an impressive five-light pointed east window with reticulated stone tracery and a hoodmould. It is supported by corner buttresses with stone quoins and offsets. The first bay features a two-light traceried stone south window with a quatrefoil in the head. Decorative ridge tiles and a stone cross adorn the east parapet. The nave has sash windows with three-over-three panes. It is noted that some of the stonework may originate from the medieval Parish Church, which became redundant after restoration. The church is possibly dedicated to both St. Martha and St. Mary.
