Description
No. 81 Akeman Street is a house, now used as offices, that dates from the 18th century or earlier, with early 19th-century front and rear extensions. The building features a stucco front and plastered ends, topped by a steeply pitched roof that is now slated. It is two storeys high and has six windows along the front, which faces east onto the pavement. The southern half of the building has a shallower parallel rear range, while the northern half features a hipped two-storey rear section.
The front of the house includes moulded surrounds and bracketed sills for the windows, a black painted plinth, and a parapet at the eaves. The ground floor has margin-light recessed sash windows, while the first floor has windows with three over three panes. There is a small moulded flat hood supported by shaped stucco brackets above the entrance. The off-centre panelled door has a three-centred curved head to its panel. Inside, the building has a clasped-purlin roof structure and a chimney capped off at the northern end.
