Description

The barn at Folly Farm is a 17th-century structure built with a timber frame, featuring dark weatherboarding and a steeply pitched old red tile roof. It is a tall, four-bay barn that faces north and includes a gabled porch located in the second bay from the west. There are mortices present for a former partition that once divided off the eastern bay. The barn has jowled posts with unjowled mid-bay posts, and a mid-height rail that is tenoned in-line, along with straight braces connecting to the tie-beams.

The roof is constructed with clasped purlins, having two purlins on each slope. It features a high upper collar with very long queen-struts that rise from the tie-beam, creating a central opening that is convenient for filling the top of the barn. Spur-collars from the queen-struts support the lower clasped purlin, which has a short queen-strut under the joint. The porch has double doors, and there is a winnowing door in the south wall opposite, along with high pitching doors in the adjacent bays. The wallplate displays squint-butted scarf joints, each secured with two edge pegs, while the purlins have single splayed scarf joints over the principals.
