Description

Grand Union Canal Bridge Number 134, also known as High Bridge at Marshcroft Lane, is a canal bridge built between 1793 and 1797 by William Jessop, the chief engineer for the Grand Junction Canal Company. The bridge is constructed of brown brick with blue brick special copings. It is a high-level turnover bridge located in the middle of the Tring Canal Cutting, where the towpath shifts from the west to the east sides. Long earth ramps lead up to the roadway at the level of Marshcroft Lane. The bridge features an elliptical three-ring arch over the canal, which, while having dimensions typical of a normal bridge, is visually dwarfed by the height and width of the battered brickwork faces that rise to a projecting brick band at roadway level, complete with brick parapet walls. The parapets curve outward at the ends and extend alongside the ramps for a short distance. The Tring Canal Cutting itself is 1½ miles long and more than 30 feet deep at its maximum, having been put into service in 1797.
