Description
The former stables at Pendley Manor were built around 1875 for Joseph Grant Williams Esq, likely designed by architect Walter F.K. Lyon, who also worked on Pendley Manor in a similar style. The stables are constructed of red brick with Bath stone dressings and feature white brick bands. The interior courtyard is finished in white brick with red brick bands and arches. The north entrance arch has a half-timbered gabled upper floor, with infill of red brick arranged in various patterns and ornamental stucco panels incised with bottle ends. The building has steep red tile roofs adorned with cusped cresting tiles, and a wooden clock cupola over the entrance topped with an ogee dome and wind vane.
The stable courtyard is rectangular, with single-storey sections on the north, east, and west sides, while the south side rises to two storeys, culminating in a pointed stone entrance arch in the middle of the north side. Large ventilators run along the roof of the taller south range, which is parallel to the road. The design is in the Jacobean style to match the main house. There is a smaller gable to the right of the entrance, likely for a stairway. The building features spiral fluted terra cotta chimney pots on moulded brick bases, and pilasters frame the clock face on the cupola. An adjoining large riding school, built in 1878, has been altered and is not considered of special interest.
