Description

This early to mid-19th century toll house is situated next to Lock 45 on the Grand Union Canal, partly within the parish of Marsworth, Buckinghamshire. It was originally built for the Grand Junction Canal Company as the Marsworth Toll Office at the western end of the Tring summit level, which was cut in 1799. The building is constructed of brown brick with buff brick flat gauged arches, featuring hipped slate roofs. It has an L-shaped layout, with an office formerly situated in the north range beside the lock-pond, and the house frontage at right angles facing east over the Wendover Arm of the canal.

The building has a plinth, a corbelled eaves band, a plastered eaves soffit, and corbelled heads to the chimneys. The symmetrical three-window east front has recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes, and a central door leading up three stone steps. The north front contains a 6-panel flush beaded door in the middle, accessed by three stone steps, complete with an iron bootscraper on the landing. A brick triangular bay window is located to the left, featuring a flat metal roof and sash windows on each face; matching sash windows are present to the right, as well as three on the first floor, with the window above the door having a higher sill and 3/3 panes. A single-storey hip-roofed wing projects on the west side with one sash window. The northern part of the building is listed separately, as item 6/105, as the house to the south of Lock 45 on the Grand Union Canal.
