Description

Farmhouse at Startop Farm, dating from the early 16th century, originally part of a hall house that extended to the north. It was converted into a separate house with a northern catslide outshut in the 17th or 18th century, and a single-storey west extension was added in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame that is roughcast over a black painted plinth, with red tile hanging on the west end and painted brick on the ground floor to the south. The roof is steep and covered with red tiles, while the dark weatherboarded west extension has a slate roof.

This two-storey and attic structure has two bays and was formerly a crosswing with a jetty at the east end, now facing south. The front has a sash window on the ground floor with 9/9 panes, and to the right is a boarded door with a rectangular fanlight and a flat hood supported by brackets. A large projecting chimney with two flues, rebuilt after an accident in the 1940s, is located to the right of the door. There are attic windows at the gable ends, and the east gable features decorative brackets at the ends of the wall plates. Inside, the frame is exposed, showcasing jowled and chamfered posts, collar and queen-strut trusses, a clasped-purlin roof with straight wind-braces, and straight tension braces along with wall framing on the ground floor of the north wall.
