Description

Cheshunt Public Library, built in 1907 by J Myrtle Smith, is a notable example of the Wren revival style. In 1965, projecting side wings were added in the same style and materials. The building features red brick with stone dressings. The central block has a gabled roof and a ground floor Roman Doric loggia supported by two columns, with curved interior walls and niches in the side walls. The upper floor includes an arched, leaded window set in a coved arch, featuring a pedestal carved with an armorial plaque, fruit swags, and winged cherubs. The cornice has an open pediment with paired mutules, and there is a hexagonal cupola topped with an ogee copper dome and a wrought iron weathervane. The ground floor has mullioned and transomed casements, which are repeated in the four-window extensions.
