Description
The Church of St James, located on St James Road in Goff's Oak, was built in 1860 by architects A G Habershon and Pite. This church is constructed from yellow brick with flush stone dressings, featuring steep slate roofs and a red tile steeple. It is designed in the early Gothic style with a cruciform plan and a polygonal apse. The church has lancet windows arranged in ones and twos, topped with oculi, and includes hood moulds with figured and leaf-carved stops. The west end features a triad of windows, and stepped buttresses surround the structure. The porch on the north side has a moulded arch and engaged shafts. Behind the porch is a clock tower with a square lower stage and an octagonal upper part that has slatted bell vents. The interior remains undivided and almost unaltered, showcasing a trussed rafter roof and leaf-carved corbels, along with an octagonal font positioned below the west window.
