Description
Gibson's Farmhouse is a house, originally a farmhouse, dating to around 1400 with significant alterations in the late 16th century. It is constructed of timber framing with plaster, and has pegtile roofs, with hips on both ends of the main block and on a rear extension. The house has two storeys and is set within a rural location, with red brick outbuildings to the west. The front elevation features an off-centre, gabled 19th-century porch, alongside older casement windows with cast iron frames and leaded lights. A square ridge line stack is located off-centre.
The northern part of the house is the former open hall of an “in-line” design, showcasing a massive arch brace to the tie beam and a cross quadrant crown post, both heavily soot blackened. An inserted partition around the central hall crown post shows painted timber framing, likely from the 16th century, and partially floors the open hall. The three bays to the south represent a late 16th-century extension, notable for its jowled posts and arch-braced side purlins in the roof.
