Description
The stable to the west of Colville Hall is an early 16th-century building that is timber framed, weatherboarded, and brick nogged, featuring a long wall jetty on the west side and a red plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high, with a stable range on the ground floor and a grand chamber above. The first floor has five windows, including oriel windows with roll moulded cills and vertical mullions. The ground floor contains two original doorways with four-centred arches and two original square windows. Inside, there is an original ladder stair at the north end, a braced side purlin roof, jowled storey posts, stop-chamfered top plates and tie beams, and halved and bridled top plate scarfs. The floor joists feature soffit tenons with diminished haunches. The craftsmanship is of high quality, and the first floor likely served as a feast room or manorial court room.
