Description

The stable range located 30 metres southeast of Baylham Hall is a notable example of a mid-16th century stable serving a large manor house. It consists of 10 bays and measures approximately 35 metres in length. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the upper storey features timber framing, with some exposed brick nogging and mainly clad in weatherboarding. The roof is pantiled and hipped to the right.

On the ground floor, there are seven original openings, which include both windows and doorways, all with four-centred arched heads. Some of these openings were likely originally windows that have since been converted into doorways, and several are fitted with boarded 19th-century doors. The upper storey showcases high-quality arch-braced close-studding, with several original mullioned windows. One window at the rear retains its square mullions and a shutter-slide, while at least one window facing the Hall features moulded reveals and evidence of moulded mullions with individual arched heads for each light.

The stable range has a complete crown-post roof, characterized by tall, square posts with thin two-way braces. In the 17th century, long rafter braces, purlins, and struts were added. The first-floor members are heavy and unmoulded, and in the right-hand section, which was used for stabling riding horses, the upper floor structure has been removed. Additionally, there is a 20th-century asbestos-clad grain store attached to the rear.
