Description
No. 48 High Street is a shop and flats that was formerly a public house. It dates from the late 16th century and 18th century and is two storeys tall with attics, featuring a gabled peg tile roof and an off-centre red brick chimney stack. At the rear, there is a two-storey gabled extension with a peg tile roof, along with 20th-century lean-to and flat-roofed extensions.
The front of the building has four double-hung sash windows on the first floor, above one 19th-century shopfront and two modern shopfronts. The off-centre 18th-century doorcase is adorned with a hood on brackets, a panelled entablature, and half-columns with reeded bands and bell-shaped capitals. The original six-panel door has raised and fielded panels and is accessed by a flight of stairs. To the north, there is a single double-hung sash window with glazing bars and a quarter-circular 18th-century single-storey extension featuring a curved peg tile roof and curved double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The interior shows remnants of timber framing from the late 16th century. The building is primarily valued for its group context.
