Description
This is an early 19th-century building, originally offices but formerly a house, located on the west side of High Street in Great Dunmow. The building is constructed with a timber frame, rendered and partly brick exterior, and has a gabled, low-pitched slate roof. The front elevation features pilaster strips at the ends and six bays of double-hung sash windows. The ground and first floors have sash windows with moulded surrounds and single vertical glazing bars. The third floor contains four widely spaced, similar sash windows. An off-centre Greek Doric plaster doorcase, featuring a flat entablature and fluted columns, provides access via a cantilevered stone staircase with handrails. A red brick gable stack is located on the south end, and a large rectangular red brick stack is present within the rear roof slope. The rear of the building incorporates a two-storey, half-hipped block with a gambrel peg tile roof, dating to an earlier period. Internally, there are remnants of earlier timber framing and some 19th-century detail. Large 20th-century extensions have been added to the rear.
