Description
H. Stokes Family Butchers is a shop that was formerly a house, dating from the 18th or 19th century. It has a timber frame that is plastered, topped with a gabled roof covered in peg tiles. The northern gable wall is clad in white weatherboarding. The building stands two storeys high and features a wing at the southeast rear with a red brick chimney stack.
On the first floor, there is a tripartite double hung sash window with a central vertical glazing bar, alongside another similar double hung sash window with a moulded surround, but with smaller panes. The ground floor showcases a full-width 19th-century butcher's shopfront that includes a projecting canopy and a meat hanging rail. There is a large painted sign on posts on the first roof slope. The ground floor also features three plain plate glass windows, two doors with iron vent strips above, and tiled stall risers. At the rear, there is an extensive slaughterhouse complex that lacks architectural interest.
