Description
Rumseys is a former shop and house located on the east side of High Street in Great Dunmow, dating from the 16th century or earlier. The building is two storeys high, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior. It follows a hall house format, featuring two gabled crosswings with peg tile roofs and a raised hall section where the ridge line slopes down to the crosswings. Each crosswing has 19th-century decorative bargeboards, applied 'timber framing', and a single double-hung sash window with glazing bars on the first floor. The upper floor of the hall section also has a pair of similar 19th-century double-hung sash windows. On the ground floor, there are three shopfronts, oriel projecting 20th-century windows with hipped peg tile roofs and small panes on each crosswing, along with a wide small-paned bowed shopfront in the center. The interior retains remnants of the old timber frame. The building is included in the heritage register primarily for its group value.
