Description

No. 28 High Street is a Grade II listed building in Great Dunmow, dating from the early 19th century, with possible earlier elements. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with a painted brick front, standing two storeys tall with attics. The building has a square plan front block with a 'U' shaped hipped roof covered in peg tiles, and a rear range that has a separate hipped roof also in peg tiles.

The front facade consists of five bays, with a projecting central bay and an architecturally similar extension to the north. The edges of the facade have pilaster-like strips, and there is a heavy 20th-century replica stone cornice. A central Tuscan portico with a flat entablature is supported by a flight of stone steps that includes contemporary boot scrapers. The windows are double-hung sashes with margin glazing bars, framed by stucco and moulded architraves. The entrance door, made of hardwood, features linen-fold panels.

The northern extension mirrors the main building but has a double-hung sash window on each floor, with deep reveals and segmental arched heads. The rear range is finished in white render and includes double-hung sash windows with small panes arranged in an irregular pattern, as well as a canted double-hung sash bay window. Attached to the rear is a single-storey gabled stable block with a peg tile roof, along with a red brick and flint extension at the end. The building has three large gault brick chimneys with decorative square pots, along with several smaller stacks. Inside, there are some late 18th-century doors and two fire-surrounds featuring Gothick overmantels.
