Description
15 Freshwell Street is a Grade II listed house located in Saffron Walden. Originally built around 1600, it has been combined from what were previously two separate houses and underwent restoration in the 20th century. The structure features a timber frame with plaster, a peg-tiled roof, and a red brick chimney stack. The house has a rectangular plan with a street-facing range and a slightly shorter brick addition at the rear. It stands at one and a half storeys.
The front northwest elevation is symmetrical, with two windows and two doors, a central chimney stack, and two gabled dormer windows. The doors, which date from the 19th century, are boarded and located at the northeast and southwest ends. The windows, restored in the 20th century, are 2-light casements with glazing bars, arranged in a 3x4 pane configuration.
On the rear southeast elevation, the main roof is complemented by a swept roof of a ground floor lean-to, which has been tiled with clay in the 20th century. This lean-to features two modern casement windows, one with two lights and another with three lights, as well as a narrow single-light casement at the northeast end of the old house wall. The northeast and southwest elevations are plain but reveal the wall plates, rafters, collars, and purlins of the trapped side-purlin roof.
Inside, the interior has been significantly rebuilt in the 20th century for necessary repairs. It retains early primary braced oak studding and features back-to-back fireplaces made of 17th-century brickwork, with rebuilt jambs and timber mantel beams. One of the fireplaces includes a 17th-century compass-drawn six-petal protection symbol.
