Description

9, 11, and 13 Freshwell Street are three houses dating from the late 16th century, with additions made in the mid-19th century. The buildings are timber-framed and plastered, with a brick structure and a peg-tiled roof. The layout is L-shaped and they stand two storeys high.

On the front northwest elevation, there is a three-window range with two units. The northeast section features a timber-framed and plastered cross-wing, while the southwest section is a brick block. Both sections are covered by a continuous hipped roof that slopes down over the lower cross-wing. There are two gault brick chimneys: one at the ridge of the northeast end and another that rises through the front roof pitch between Nos. 11 and 13. The cross-wing (No. 9) displays remnants of fan-combed pargetting, and cut-off wall-plates are visible.

The ground floor includes a boarded and battened door, alongside a 20th-century three-light fixed casement window with rectangular leaded panes. The first floor features a three-light sliding sash window with glazing bars arranged in three rows of three panes. The brick units (Nos. 11 and 13) have segment-headed windows with 19th-century two-light metal casements, all with six panes by four panes. The doorways are also segment-headed and positioned at the outer edges. The door for No. 11 is a 19th-century boarded door with bead moulding, while No. 13 has a 20th-century ten-panel door.

On the southwest end elevation, the houses are timber-framed and plastered above the ground floor brickwork, with a casement window on each floor. The northeast end elevation is plain, featuring a slightly projecting timber-framed and plastered rear wing. Inside No. 9, exposed framing can be seen.
