Description

Two houses, numbers 3 and 5 Freshwell Street, were built around 1550. They are timber-framed and have a peg-tiled roof and red brick stacks. The plan is rectangular. The front elevation is a long, jettied range; some of the jetty has been reduced by plastering. A bracket brace is visible on the jetty joist at the north-east end, with a straight, hollow chamfered moulding. The front is pargetted, with matching 20th-century repair work. The elevation has a six-window, two-door range, plus a passageway under the jetty at the north-east end. All windows are 20th-century sliding sash windows with 4x3 panes. The doors are 20th-century boarded and battened. A stack is located towards the north-east end, and another is on the south-west gable. The rear elevation is similar to the front, with 20th-century 2-light casement windows and 20th-century fully glazed doors with 2x4 panes. A slight break in the wall, off-centre towards the south-west, suggests two separate builds. The south-west end elevation displays side purlins clasped between the collar and rafter, along with the front wall plate. The ground floor has a 20th-century 2-light casement window and an external stack. The interior of number 5 was considerably rebuilt in the 20th century, but basic framing members are still visible.
