Description

This building comprises three shops – a Co-operative Pharmacy, a Dry Cleaning Centre, and a Hairstylist – situated on Manningtree High Street. The structure’s origins lie in the 16th century or earlier, with subsequent additions in the 17th century to the south and east, and 18th-century facades. Later alterations, additions, and rear ranges have also been incorporated.

Number 38, the Co-op Pharmacy, features a timber-framed and plastered facade. At the rear is an original red brick wing. The roof is grey slate, and a red brick chimney stack is situated to the right. A fine, tall red brick chimney stack stands at the rear left, distinguished by its moulded base, six octagonal shafts with moulded rings, and capping. A moulded eaves cornice is also present. The building is two storeys high and has five small-paned vertically sliding sash windows on the first floor, along with two similar windows on the ground floor's left side. A central six-panelled door is enclosed by reveal panels, moulded capitals and bases to half columns, a moulded frieze, and a flat canopy. A 19th-century shop front on the right exhibits pedimented pilasters framing the fascia, with a 20th-century shop door to the left and a matching window to the right.

Number 40, the Dry Cleaning Centre, is constructed with painted brick and has a red plain tile roof. A large, external, attached shaft chimney stack is shared with Number 42. The building is two storeys high and includes a central two-storey bow with 20th-century casements on each floor, accentuated by brick bands at window head height. A 20th-century door is located to the right.

Number 42, the Krystyna Hairstylist, is a lower and smaller two-storey range, clad in painted brick with a grey slate roof. A tall, attached red brick chimney stack, shared with Number 40, is on the right. A single small-paned vertically sliding sash window is on the first floor, while a shop bay window with glazing bars is situated to the right of a fascia. A recessed, 20th-century glazed door is on the left, featuring reveal panels, a fluted surround, a frieze, fluted brackets, and a flat canopy.

To the left (east), attached to the building, are the remnants of a wall and the buttress of the demolished Parish Church of St. Michael and All Angels. This wall, constructed of red brick and flint with a plinth, extends forwards of Number 42 and continues through the ground floor return. The original red brick rear wing features mullion windows with two and three lights. Various other rear ranges are also present. The church was supposedly built in 1616 and demolished in 1906.
