Description

23, 25 and 27 South Street is a house located in Manningtree, with a rear wing dating from around 1600 (No. 25) and a front range and additions from the 17th and 18th centuries. The building features a timber-framed and plastered rear, with a painted brick façade and red plain tiled roofs. It is two storeys high with attics and has a dentilled eaves cornice.

On the first floor, there are three small paned vertically sliding sash windows, with the right window being tripartite and having moulded surrounds. The ground floor has a similar window on the left side. The central entrance consists of a four-panel, two-light door with a segmental head. To the right, there is a segmental carriageway arch that is now half blocked, with a half-glazed door. Above the door, there is a fanlight and a cross transom window to the left. At the time of re-survey, there was no entry into the building, but it was noted to contain two remnant bays of a larger structure. The interior features jowled storey posts, floor joists on the ground floor with centre tenons and diminished haunches, and a lodged side purlin roof.
