Description

No. 17, South Street is a house with a shop front dating back to the 15th century, with significant alterations and additions made in the 16th, 17th, and later centuries. The building is timber-framed and has been plastered, with a red plain tiled roof. Chimney stacks are located to the rear right and on a rear wing. The house has two storeys and attics, as well as cellars.

The first floor features two 19th-century sash windows that slide vertically. The ground floor to the left has a three-light shop window with segmental heads and carved spandrels, a fascia above, and to the right, a six-panel door with a moulded surround, frieze, and a flat canopy.

The left return has an attic window, four first-floor windows (the leftmost being a small, horizontally sliding sash window with small panes), and three ground-floor sash windows that slide vertically. An angled bay window is present to the right and a small 20th-century window is located to the left of the four-panel door.

The rear wing is an altered hall. Interior features include an octagonal crown post with a moulded capital and base, braced to the purlin and collars; a 16th-century circular newel staircase; and a plastered ceiling on the first floor. There are also 18th-century wall paintings.
