Description

The White Hart Public House is a public house located on Great Wakering High Street. It is originally a medieval hall house with a right crosswing, dating from the 15th or 16th century or earlier, with later additions and alterations including a raised roof over the hall. The left crosswing appears to be of a later date, though its frame is concealed by modern decorations. The building features rear ranges and is constructed from timber framing with plaster, displaying batten decoration on the first floor. It has red plain tiled roofs with forward gabled crosswings on both the right and left sides. There are off-centre left and external right red brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high, with a first floor that has a 1:2:1 arrangement of small paned vertically sliding sash windows. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century small paned bay window on the left and a 19th-century bay window on the right. The central section features three 20th-century small paned windows, flanked by doors with pilasters, and a continuous fascia above the central doors and windows. Although some of the first floor frame is obscured by 20th-century artex decoration, the top plate of the hall is visible, along with a steeply cambered tie beam with solid arched braces in the crosswing, as well as some storey posts and wall studs.
