Description
The boundary marker post, located adjacent to the north side of the west door of the west tower at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, dates from the 19th century. It is made of cast iron and features a square post topped with a circular bell-shaped head and a finial. Below the head, there is a square panel with moulded letters "ST. B.H." and a Coat of Arms, which refers to St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. The advowson and land were granted around 1190 by William de Taydena to the Master of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, who held patronage until 1960, when the Bishop of Chelmsford accepted the Right of Presentation. This post is one of two similar markers at the church. Historical notes regarding the church and parish of Little Wakering were provided by Howard W. Sanderson, F.R.G.S., the vicar, though they are undated.
