Description

Little Wakering Hall is a hall house with origins dating back to the 15th century or earlier, with alterations and additions made in the 16th century and later. It features a timber frame with plastering and red plain tiled roofs. The building has crosswings on the left and right, with the right crosswing jettied at the front and right return, supported by carved jetty brackets, a dragon beam, and a post.

To the right of the left crosswing, there is a two-storey hipped porch. The left return has an offset chimney stack with two diagonal shafts, while the rear of the hall has two stacks with three and two diagonal shafts, respectively. The hall stands two storeys high with attics, featuring three rear gabled dormers. The windows are small paned vertically sliding sashes arranged in a 1:1:3:1 pattern. The porch and hall have a moulded eaves cornice and a central band.

The porch includes a chamfered two-centred outer arch, and the doorway has a moulded square head and jambs, leading to a three-board door. There is a rear stair turret and other extensions. The hall's roof was raised in the 16th century, and the stair turret was added at that time, with the porch being a later addition. Inside, there are exposed ceiling beams, one of which is dated 1599, along with a 16th-century fireplace with a mantelbeam and brick moulding on another fireplace.

A fine Elizabethan staircase features solid treads and square plan balusters, with some original roof construction still visible. There is also an 18th-century firesurround and a possible smugglers look-out in the roof gablet, accessible by steps. The east wing was originally longer, with signs of the building still visible in the garden wall. Little Wakering Hall was once owned by Rev. Philip Benton, a 19th-century historian.
