Description
Black Cottage is a cottage that dates from the early 17th century or earlier, with alterations and additions made in the 18th century and later. It features a timber frame, with parts that are plastered and others that are weatherboarded. The roof is covered with red plain tiles. There are external red brick chimney stacks on the left and off-center right, with the latter having attached square shafts. The cottage is one storey high with attics and includes two catslide dormers. It has a three-window range of 20th-century small paned casements and a vertically boarded door topped with a slanting canopy. Restoration work was in progress at the time of the last survey. Inside, there is an inglenook fireplace and exposed timbers from the 17th and 18th centuries. The right bays of the cottage may be of earlier origin, and the plinth bricks could also be from an earlier period. The roof timbers are numbered.
