Description
Ashman's Farmhouse is a house with medieval origins that has undergone several alterations and additions over the years, including a re-roofing in the early 17th century, a rebuilt hall, and an inserted chimney stack, along with restorations in the 20th century. The building is timber framed and plastered, featuring a red plain tiled roof. There are red brick chimney stacks located at the rear, off centre to the left and external to the right. The house is two storeys tall, with a window arrangement of 1:1 on the first floor and 1:2 on the ground floor, consisting of vertically sliding sashes with side margins and pelmets above. The entrance includes a four-panelled, two-light door set in a moulded surround topped with a moulded open pediment supported by brackets. Inside, the exposed timber frame includes arch braces on the walls and some mullion windows. There is also a notable 19th-century cast iron fireplace and surround. An inventory from 1783 provides details about the rooms and their contents. Additionally, an article about the property by M. Eddy and Mrs. P. Ryan is set to be published in the Transactions of the Essex Archaeological Society in 1985.
