Description

Whitaker's Charity Almshouses is a terrace of almshouses built in 1827. Constructed from stock brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings and a slate roof, the building has a half-H plan. It consists of four almshouses in a line, with two entrance lobbies; nos. 2 and 3 share one lobby, while nos. 4 and 5 share the other. Nos. 1 and 6 are crosswings at each end, facing southeast.

The structure features a double chimney stack in the middle serving nos. 3 and 4, along with four other single axial chimney stacks. There are external porches at the southeast ends of the crosswings for nos. 1 and 6. Each porch has half-glazed doors inside, set within gabled roofs, and stone arches with a four-centred curvature and drip moulds. The two entrance lobbies in the main range also have similar arches.

The building has four windows featuring 19th-century wooden casements with fixed lights above, heavy tracery with a four-centred curvature in the fixed lights, and stone arches above. In the center, there is a recessed plaster panel with three diamonds in an irregular cartouche, bordered with acanthus and a mutilated inscription reading AW 1827. The charity was established by the will of Anne Whitaker of Loughton Hall, which was proved in 1825.
