Description
House. Built around 1600, it is a timber-framed building with a rough render finish. The roof is red tiled, with two gabled features and a central gabled two-story porch. The house is two stories high with attics, and includes a full-height stair turret at the rear. It has a two-window facade, primarily featuring original 3- or 4-light mullion windows with leaded lights, and an original plank and muntin door leading to the porch. Various extensions have been incorporated at the rear. The building exhibits six attached red brick chimney shafts, octagonal in shape, with moulded bases and cappings. The interior reveals jowled storey posts and a roof constructed with side purlins. The stair turret contains an octagonal central newel post, original treads and risers, and mullion windows. Two first-floor fireplaces retain original moulded and stop-chamfered plaster surrounds. One ground floor room is fully panelled, featuring an arabesque frieze and a notable Jacobean fireplace decorated with arabesque and jewel motifs, while another fireplace has a foliate carved surround. A further panelled room contains a carved frieze. There are several 18th-century doors, along with original panelled doors, and original floorboards throughout. This is a fine example of a building from its period.
