Description

Livingstone Cottages consists of six cottages arranged in two blocks with a central passageway. They were built in the 18th century and have 20th-century rear extensions. The cottages are timber framed and rough rendered, featuring plain red tile roofs at two levels. The left block has four hipped dormers, while the right block has four gabled dormers. The windows include small paned casements on the left and sliding sashes on the right, with moulded eaves cornices. The cottages are two storeys high with attics, showcasing an eight-window range of small paned vertical sliding sash windows on the first floor.

The left block has three matching windows on the ground floor along with three four-panel doors that have pediments and brackets. The right block features three four-panel doors with flat canopies, brackets, and moulded surrounds, and has a four-window range, two of which have three lights. A plaque on this block indicates that the cottages were vested in Trustees for the benefit of the Congregational Church, following the wishes of the late Josiah Gilbert on August 15, 1892. Another plaque above the central passageway notes that David Livingstone lived in this room in 1838 just before embarking on his significant work in Central Africa. The passageway's lintel is supported by ornate brackets and is boarded throughout.
