Description
The United Reformed Church, built around 1833 to the design of John Sadd, is a church constructed from gault brick with a return wall made of early yellow stocks and a grey slate roof. It features a 20th-century central porch that extends forward and is designed to match the main building as closely as possible. This porch includes four pilaster strips, four panelled double doors, and a pediment.
The main structure is two storeys high and has a gable with a roundel that includes foliar infill. The first floor has three windows, while the ground floor has two ranges of 18th-century small paned vertical sliding sashes with coloured, patterned glazed margins. There are recessed side strips and an upper central window that is adorned with moulded stone brackets and a patera beneath a flat canopy. The ground floor windows are framed by moulded stone surrounds and canopies.
Additional architectural details include a central band, a moulded band at the eaves, and a moulded cornice at the gable. The return wall consists of four bays with pilaster strips and four full-length small paned windows featuring gauged brick arches and keystones, although one window is now blocked. Notably, Congregational Minister Isaac Taylor and David Livingstone preached in this church.
