Description

This is a Coal Duty Marker dating to around 1860, cast by Henry Grissell. The post is made of cast iron and is white painted. It features a square column with chamfered corners and a pyramidal top. Below the pyramidal top, there is a shield that displays the City of London crest. The raised inscription on the column reads ‘24 VICT’, which refers to the 1861 London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act. At ground level, the post also bears the maker's mark.
