Description

This is a Coal and Wine Duty Marker from 1862, cast by Henry Grissell. The post is made of cast iron and is white painted. It has a square column with chamfered corners and a pyramidal top. Below the top, there is a shield displaying the City of London crest. The raised inscription on the column reads ‘4 & 25 VIC CAP 42’, which refers to the 1861 London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act. At the back of the post, near the ground, is the maker's mark.
