Description
West Lodge, Gateway, and East Lodge are located at the London entrance drive to Copt Hall, dating from 1767. They were built around the same time as the remodelling of Copt Hall, which occurred circa 1775, and was designed by James Wyatt. The lodges are constructed of stock brick and feature a one-storey elevation facing the road, with a sash window set in a tall round arched recess. This arch is adorned with stone archivolts and a stone cornice, topped by a pediment and a slate roof. Circular Coade stone plaques are placed in the spandrels of the arch. Each lodge has short lengths of wall on either side, which include round-headed niches and Adam style Coade stone urns above. The wall tops are ramped up to the sides of the lodges. The two-storey elevations facing the drive also feature sash windows.
The entrance includes double wrought iron carriage gates, with matching piers and pedestrian gates on either side. The gates have ramped top rails with spikes, and the plain piers are topped with matching Adam style urns. West Lodge, Gateway, and East Lodge together form a cohesive group.
