Description
The lodge, gates, and gatepiers to Cottesbrooke Hall (west) were built in the late 18th century and designed by architect Robert Mitchell. Constructed from limestone ashlar, the lodge originally had a one-unit plan and is a single storey. It features a central sash window with glazing bars, which is set in a shallow arched recess and has a balustrade below and a pediment above. The door facing the drive consists of six fielded panels with moulded stone architraves, also set in a shallow arch, with shields of arms in the tympanums. The structure includes a frieze cornice, a panelled and balustraded parapet topped with large oval urns at the center.
To the right, there is a wrought iron gate hanging from a rusticated pier with a moulded cornice and oval patrae, flanked by a Roman Doric two-column open screen that features wrought iron panels and hand gates, all surmounted by an entablature with a triglyph frieze and a sphinx above, linking to the flanking lodge. The lodge, gates, and gatepiers are paired with the east lodge and were relocated to their current position in 1938 from the Leicester Road.
